White Mist or Black Mist?

Both filters soften highlights, but the resulting character is different. Compare White Mist and Black Mist at the same 1/8, 1/4 or 1/2 intensity.

At 1/2 intensity, the difference between the filters is clear: White Mist creates a more prominent milky veil, while Black Mist produces a pronounced glow and retains dark areas more effectively.

Choosing the intensity

Black Mist 1/2 is a strong option.

Compared with the 1/4 version, the 1/2 intensity provides a more pronounced glow, stronger image softening and a more noticeable reduction in contrast. It is suitable for creative portraits, filmmaking and night scenes.

Gently softens highlights and reduces microcontrast only minimally. It retains a high level of fine detail.

Black Mist creates an intentional visual effect.

The filter changes the character of the image as it is captured. The strength of the effect depends on the filter intensity, scene contrast and the presence of strong light sources. Higher intensities, especially 1/2, can appear very pronounced in backlit or night scenes.

The effect is not always equally strongIt can be subtle in soft light and pronounced when shooting against the light.

VFFOTO hybrid system

A screw-in and magnetic filter in one.

You can screw the filter directly into the lens thread or attach it magnetically to an adapter or another compatible VFFOTO filter.

The front magnetic surface allows another VFFOTO hybrid or magnetic filter of the same diameter to be attached. Black Mist can be combined with a CPL, ND or variable ND filter, for example. When stacking multiple filters, however, check wide-angle lenses for vignetting.

Compatibility

Hybrid Black Mist filters and lens hoods

With a hybrid Black Mist filter, checking the thread diameter alone is not enough. The clearance inside the lens hood is also important because some hoods fit very tightly.

This is not a filter defect. Compatibility depends on the design of the particular lens and lens hood and on the available space around the filter.

With a hybrid system, the safest approach is always to test the specific combination of lens, filter and lens hood in practice.
